Office Hours with ORP: Dr. Sinan Onal discusses Hanover Research
Posted April 23, 2025
This year the Graduate School piloted a partnership with Hanover Research to provide a suite of grant proposal development resources and prospecting support to SIUE faculty who are interested in pursuing external funding. These resources include grantsmanship training, identification of funding opportunities, proposal review and revision support, and more. This support is an expansion of current available resources in the Office of Research and Projects.
Recently, we spoke with Dr. Sinan Onal, Associate Professor and Chair in the Department of Industrial Engineering about his experience working with Hanover Research as he prepared his NSF S-STEM submission. Click here to learn about Dr. Onal’s experience.
Dr. Onal’s research primarily focuses on human-centered AI applications in healthcare, medical image processing, biomechanical analysis, and engineering education. A significant aspect of his work involves securing external funding to support research initiatives, interdisciplinary collaborations, and student involvement.
Over the years, Dr. Onal has successfully submitted proposals to agencies such as NSF, NIH, and IIN, which has helped fund projects in biomechanical analysis. He has also collaborated with external partners, including faculty from different institutions, industry and healthcare organizations, to develop impactful solutions.
In addition to securing funding, he has experience leading proposal development efforts, coordinating multi-institutional teams, and aligning research goals with funding priorities. Dr. Onal’s approach involves strategic planning, tailoring proposals to agency expectations, and integrating broader impacts such as workforce development.
