Heating & Cooling
Residence Halls (Bluff, Evergreen, Prairie, and Woodland Halls)
Each residence hall is on one heating and cooling system, which means the hall only has heat or air conditioning at any one time. The system works by circulating heated or cooled water throughout the building to individual rooms where fans are used to move the warm or cool air into the room. Please make sure you keep at least 18 inches of clear space around your ventilation unit.
To switch the system from one mode to another mode is time-intensive, so the switch is made only once in the fall and once in the spring. When switching from one mode to another, the system will be on coast mode.
Additionally, the temperature can fluctuate throughout the building, depending on the floor, windows, etc. Decisions about the heating and cooling systems consider the long-term forecast, overall building temperatures, and student-initiated work orders.
Tips for Maintaining Comfortable Temperature in your Living Unit:
We recognize the value and importance of a comfortable temperature in your living unit. We recommend the following settings in your unit to maintain a comfortable temperature:
- Dial halfway between Warmer and Cooler
- Fan set to Medium
- To have AC running your unit, you must have the setting on “cool”. Fan only will not provide cool air.
- If you are cold, switch your unit to the Off position to stop any air from coming out of the unit.
Cougar Village
In Cougar Village you can switch between heating and cooling in each unit using the thermostat. Please make sure you always leave the fan setting to AUTO. The Heating and Cooling system will not work properly if you set the fan to ON. You will need to switch from heat to cool depending on the temperature desired.
If your unit is at an extreme temperature, please submit a maintenance request.
