The Wedge Innovation Center Opens Doors to Regional Transformation

The greater Alton/St. Louis Metro Region took a bold step into the future today as community and regional leaders gathered to celebrate the grand opening of The Wedge Powered by Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville. The ribbon-cutting ceremony officially launched the 55,000-square-foot social impact hub, research lab, think tank, and workspace designed to drive innovation and economic growth across the bi-state region. The Wedge officially begins operations on April 7, 2025.
The Wedge, a signature project of AltonWorks developed in partnership SIUE, represents a transformative investment in the region's digital economy. Following a $20 million investment in a 10G fiber network funded by the State of Illinois, The Wedge is positioned to become a cornerstone for regional innovation and workforce development.
"Today marks more than just the opening of a building – it's the dawn of a new era for our region," said John Simmons, AltonWorks CEO, during the ceremony. "The Wedge embodies our vision for a thriving, interconnected community where innovation drives prosperity and creates opportunities for generations to come."
The facility, which brings together two historic buildings into one state-of-the-art center, will serve as home to SIUE's specialized programming and technical expertise, including the GeoMarc Program, Center for Predictive Analytics, and Center for Sustainable Communities and Entrepreneurship.
James T. Minor, PhD, SIUE Chancellor, emphasized the University's commitment to the partnership. "SIUE is proud to power The Wedge with our research capabilities and educational programming. This collaboration allows us to extend our mission beyond the classroom, drive economic growth and meet people where they are to provide high-quality educational opportunities throughout the region."
J. Scot Heathman, recently appointed CEO of The Wedge, outlined his vision for the center's impact. "The Wedge represents a unique opportunity to connect talent, ideas, and resources across state lines," said Heathman. "Our goal is to create an innovation ecosystem where entrepreneurs, researchers, professionals and citizens can collaborate to solve problems and drive sustainable growth throughout the Midwest."
Construction on The Wedge began December 7, 2022. Nearly 200,000 hours of labor was spent on the renovation of the Wedge over about 28 months of construction. Labor accounts for about 65% of the total cost of renovation, which stands at $33 million.
The facility features a range of amenities, including shared workspaces, private offices, multi-office suites, conference rooms, a gym with locker rooms, retail spaces, and a rooftop terrace. The Wedge will offer diverse programming, services and opportunity such as professional development programs addressing both personal and professional growth needs for members and non-members.
