Paid Course Redesign Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)

1. Purpose
This SOP outlines the process, expectations, and stipend structure for faculty and departments engaging in a paid course redesign. The goal is to ensure high-quality, accessible, timely, relevant and consistent online course offerings that align with institutional standards and student needs.
2. Faculty and Department Agreement in Course Design Projects
By engaging in a course redesign, faculty and departments agree to the following:
2.1 IDLT Full Engagement
The Instructional Design and Learning Technologies (IDLT) team will actively participate in the process and maintain the final product specifically:
2.2 Course Storage for Future Use
The redesigned course will be stored in a way that allows future qualified instructors to access and teach it as needed.
2.3 Accelerated Format
Unless prior approval is granted, the course will be developed for an accelerated format (8 weeks or less).
2.4 Reserved Seats for Online Students
Seats will be reserved specifically for fully online undergraduate students to support accessibility and enrollment needs.
3. Stipend Structure and Eligibility
Stipends for course design and redesign are determined based on the following criteria:

4. Frequency of Course Redesign Stipends
Faculty members are eligible to receive a $1,500 stipend for redesigning the same course every three years, provided at least one of the following conditions is met:
- Adoption of new course materials.
- Changes to course learning outcomes.
- Inclusion of new content or updated examples relevant to evolving disciplines.
- Implementation of new compliance or accessibility standards as identified by the Institution, Office of Online Services & Educational Outreach (OSEO) or IDLT.
- Transition to an 8-week or shorter course format.
- The original content developer is no longer with the institution.
5. Additional Stipends Available
Faculty may also be eligible for additional stipends in the following cases:
- Textbook Affordability Initiative: Faculty who transition course materials to Cengage (during the active partnership period with Cengage). More details can be found here: https://www.siue.edu/textbook-affordability/cengage-unlimited/

6. SOP Ownership and Accessibility
This SOP is recommended for placement under Online Program Development & Delivery on the institutional website for faculty reference.
