General Education Assessment
SIUE has engaged faculty, staff, and administrators in the development of a new general education assessment plan. This plan is implemented through a broad-based general education assessment committee, which includes members from across the University and builds on the expertise of this multi-disciplinary team. The committee has engaged in research and serious discussion about how best to articulate and assess student learning related to the Objectives of the Baccalaureate Degree.
Aassessment plans were vetted through various stakeholders and have undergone two additional cycles of improvement since its inception. Changes include simplementation of the Critical tthinking Assessment Test (CAT) to test analytic problem solving, written communication and scientific literacy in freshman and senior courses. Oral communication is evaluated by analyzing artifacts in freshman communication courses and senior aassignment courses. Finally, in the third cycle, the committee included interviews and open-ended survey items to gaether student evidence on diversity, ethics, and foundations of liberal arts and sciences.
Recognizing the breadth of the general education objectives, the full assessment process will be carried out over a 4-year period with each year focusing on specific objectives. Results from the most recent assessment cycle were presented to faculty and university stakeholders in Fall 2024 All-Faculty Meeting and the fourth assessment cycle will begin in the following academic year.
