Visiting/Exchange Students

Thank you for your interest in SIUE. All prospective exchange students wishing to study at SIUE must be nominated by their home university, and the home university must be one of SIUE’s exchange partner institutions.

A wide range of undergraduate-level business, art, humanities and science courses are available to exchange students. To search available courses and view class schedules, visit the Office of the Registrar website.

Exchange Student Application Requirements

All prospective exchange students wishing to study at SIUE must be nominated by their home university, and the home university must be one of SIUE’s exchange partner institutions. All exchange student applications must be sent from the home institution exchange program coordinator.

If you are a business student coming from one of SIUE’s School of Business partnership schools, please contact Deanna Lotter in the School of Business at dlotter@siue.edu for appropriate application forms.

Steps to Admission
  • Partner institution sends a nomination to studentexchange@siue.edu that includes the student name, email and program of study
  • SIUE sends application link to the student exchange application via email
    • The student should complete the online application questionnaire and print the included financial form.
  • Partner institution emails a copy of the student’s current transcript and proof of English language proficiency to studentexchange@siue.edu
    • Please note: This must come from the program coordinator or other official at the university, and cannot be sent by the student directly. If the transcript is not in English, an accurate translation must be provided. A test score report (TOEFL, TOEIC, IELTS, etc.) is the preferred method for proof of English proficiency.
  • Student completes the online financial application, uploads a copy of their passport (biographical page), and downloads and completes the financial form
    • The student and their sponsor must sign the financial form. Students must upload a copy of an original, signed bank statement showing availability of funds. Make sure the scanned copies are readable. Note: You must bring these with you to SIUE when you arrive to begin classes.
  • Once admitted, a DS-2019 form is generated for the student to obtain a visa to study in the U.S.
After You’ve Been Admitted
  • The academic department at SIUE will work directly with the exchange coordinator at the partner school to select coursework and register the student for classes.
  • The student should apply for on-campus housing and pay the $300 deposit.
    • Deadlines
      • Fall: May 1
      • Spring: November 1
  • Students must purchase health insurance through SIUE Health Service. Students are automatically enrolled in this program, and the premium is billed to the student’s account. Student fees are not covered unlike tuition and are also billed to the students account. Students also must provide a copy of their immunization records as soon as possible.
  • Students should purchase tickets to arrive at St. Louis Lambert International Airport (STL) at least one week before classes begin. Airport pickup is provided on designated dates and can be requested on our arrival website. Please send an itinerary to studentexchange@siue.edu by July 1 for the fall semester and December 1 for the spring semester.
  • All international students need to register for and participate in the international student orientation.

Advising and Registration

All students must meet with an academic advisor before enrolling in their first semester. Advisors help develop a plan of study, select appropriate courses and help students transition to the University.

If you are an undergraduate student, please contact the Office of Academic Advising.

If you are a graduate student, please contact your academic department for instructions.

Please remember the following when registering for classes with your academic advisor:

  • J-1 students must maintain full-time enrollment in order to comply with visa regulations
  • Undergraduate students are required to register for a minimum of 12 credit hours each fall and spring semester
  • Graduate students must be registered for a minimum of nine credit hours each fall and spring semester
  • Summer enrollment is optional, unless it is the first semester of enrollment at SIUE

Please note: J-1 students can only take less than the required course load with prior approval by the Office of International Student and Scholar Services.

For additional questions, please email studentexchange@siue.edu.

On-Campus Housing

SIUE offers a diverse residential community, and living on campus is the best way to become involved, find support and meet friends. On-campus housing is conveniently located near academic buildings, dining areas, campus recreation and much more.

University Housing provides a variety of on-campus housing options for undergraduate and graduate students. You will need to complete a housing application and pay a $125 advance payment for University housing.

Students have the option to sign a summer housing contract and live on campus year round, if needed. Cougar Village apartments house two to four single students who usually share a two-bedroom furnished unit. These units have full kitchens and can also accommodate families. In addition, year-round shuttle service is available to campus and the local communities.

International Exchange Students: You will apply to live in Cougar Village. Cougar Village offers a full kitchen to prepare meals and is open during breaks and vacations.

Early Arrival and Late Departure

If you plan to arrive during a break or vacation and need to move into Cougar Village, please note that early arrivals to (or late departures from) University Housing are outside the contracted housing period and will result in a per-night charge. The rate is dependent on the type of space to which you are assigned for the contracted period.

To submit a request for early arrival or late departure, please contact University Housing at housing@siue.edu.
