Spend Your Summer with SIUE

College students, learners of all ages, and professionals seeking to develop their careers can take advantage of a plethora of online or in-person learning opportunities this summer at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
“There are a multitude of people who spend their leisure time at SIUE learning something new,” said Mary Ettling, director of Online Services and Educational Outreach. “The Office of Educational Outreach is dedicated to serving our community by supporting and promoting the resources and educational programming available at SIUE to the broader Metro East community.”
For incoming, visiting, and current students hoping to lighten their fall courseload, stay on track for graduation, or explore new subjects, SIUE’s Summer Session provides over 850 credit-bearing courses to help them reach their academic goals.
Introductory general education courses, required upper-division classes, and graduate-level seminars are available online, in-person, or in hybrid formats. Many courses meet for five weeks or less, leaving plenty of time for other summer plans. Class registration for visiting students begins April 10.
Aside from credit-bearing courses, SIUE also offers a variety of non-credit learning opportunities. From hands-on workshops in culinary arts, drawing, painting, and learning a new language to career-enhancing skill development programs and professional certification offerings, there’s something for everyone.
“This summer, we are thrilled to offer some of our favorite returning courses such as Conversational Spanish, Learning to Knit, Watercolor Painting, and Grant Writing, as well as new offerings that include Introduction to Woodblock Printmaking and a Qiqong Meditation course,” said Ettling.
Specialized professional development opportunities tailored to today’s evolving job market are available to those looking to gain a competitive edge, pivot to a new industry, or refine existing skills.
The Lifelong Learning Institute offers enriching experiences for adults who seek to expand their knowledge and engage with others looking to explore a wide range of topics. Various Learning-on-the-Go local excursions will be taking place this summer.
For young learners, SIUE’s summer camps provide exciting experiences that blend fun and discovery. With more than 20 camps ranging from performing and visual arts, music, sports, filmmaking, STEM, robotics, and more, students entering Kindergarten and higher can explore their interests while developing valuable skills and making memories on campus at SIUE.
“Our summer campers are able to learn directly from SIUE faculty and industry leaders while engaging in enriching activities in a variety of disciplines,” said Ettling. “It’s exciting to see some of our future Cougars on campus each summer!”
